Background

The schools are in Trans-Nzoia east district Cherangany division. Both schools are Catholic sponsored under The Catholic Diocese of Kitale-Kaplamai parish.

St. Paul’s Sinoko sec. sch. is a mixed day and boarding school with student population of 505, 226 are boarding. It has long experience and persistent water problem mostly during dry and minimal rainy seasons. The school is forced to purchase water trough donkey transport at a cost of kshs 25000 every month.

St. Mary’s Kipsing’ori girl’s school is fairly an upcoming school with student population of 101. It is purely a girl’s day school with challennges of infrastructure i.e. administration block, classrooms, laboratory and kitchen. It has a small borehole that needs improvement to ensure sustainable water supply.

The Catholic Water Programme did water needs assessments in these schools and would like to intervene and solve the water problems through water well construction, pumping systems and roof catchment raim water harvesting.

Objectives:

  1. To get clean water for domestic use in school
  2. To reduce water cost and walking distances to water points.
  3. To reduce the workload of school community and students in search of water.
  4. To improve the quality of food preparation and hygiene in school.
  5. To reduce water borne diseases.
  6. To improver cleanliness and hygiene of children in school.
  7. To create a conducive environment in school that increases enroiment and improved academic performance.

Main Activities:

  1. Construction and Protection of a water well approximately 70 ft. deep.
  2. Constructies of culvert for the protection of the water well sides.
  3. Installation of electric water pumps.
  4. Installation of overhead water tanks.
  5. Water supply connections (pipelines).
  6. Installation of water tanks and gutter systems for roof catchment rain water harvesting.
  7. Constructions of water tap stands/collection points.

MAIN ACTIVITIES

St. Paul’s Sinoko Sec School

  • Digging and construction of borehole protected with culverts
  • Onsite construction of culverts
  • Installation of electric submersible pump to pump water to an overhead tank.
  • Installation of an overhead tank on top of a fabricated steel stand fixed to the ground. near to the borehole
  • Connection of 550 metre pipelines to water supply storage tanks and taps stations/points.
  • Installation of 5 rain water harvesting tanks and gutter systems in the dormitory and dining hall.

St. Mary’s Kipsingori Girls Sec. School

  • Installation of electric submersible pump to pump water to an overhead tank.
  • Installation of an overhead tank on top of a fabricated steel stand fixed to the ground near to the borehole.
  • Connection of 300 metre pipelines to water supply storage tanks and tap stations/points.
  • Installation of 5 rain water harvesting tanks and gutter systems in the classrooms and the office block.
  • Impoving existing borehole by inserting some culverts.
